Three Cups of Tea

"It is my vision that we all will dedicate the next decade to achieve universal literacy and education for all children, especially for girls. More than 145 million of the world's children are deprived of education, due to poverty, exploitation, slavery, gender discrimination, religious extremism, and corrupt governments. May Three Cups of Tea be a catalyst to bring the gift of literacy to each of those children who deserves a chance to go to school."

Ashley and I both read the book "Three Cups of Tea" and we have to say that everyone needs to read this book! Greg Mortenson, through building schools throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan,  has accomplished and contributed more in a decade than we could hope to in our entire lives.

Greg uses many great quotes throughout his book and here are a few that have stuck with us on our travels.

"When it is dark enough,  you can see the stars"- Persian Proverb

"As the US confronts Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq, Greg Mortenson, 45, is quietly waging his own campaign against Islamic fundamentalists, who often recruit members through religious schools called madrassas. Mortenson's approach hinges on a simple idea: that by building secular schools and helping to promote education, particularly for girls, in the worlds most volatile war zone, support for the Tailaban and other extremest sects eventually will dry up."- Keven Fedarko, Parade

"When your heart speaks, take good notes"- Judith Campbell

Here are some great reads/links on ways to contribute to "peace through education:"
It costs a dollar per month for one child's education in Pakistan or Afghanistan, one penny to buy a pencil, and a teacher's salary averages a dollar a day

  1. Greg's book "Stones into Schools" is his follow up book and picks up where "3 cups" left off. Fabulous book.
