Well since we've inundated you with photos, I thought it was about time that I tell what we've been up to. Last Friday we left Singapore and headed to Pulau Tioman, an island off the east coast of Malaysia. It took a five hour bus ride and then another three hour ferry to reach the island, but when we stepped off the ferry, we knew that this island is the tropical paradise our souls had been yearning for. We thought Thailand was perfect, we hoped Bali or the Gilis would be nice, but compared to Pulau Tioman, these places are clearly at the bottom of the list! I hesitate in even mentioning Pulau Tioman because it feels like the best kept secret out there, but it is so perfect I can't help but let this secret out, while describing this place with every superlative possible. The water was the clearest we have ever seen, a perfect shade of turquoise that gently flows towards a brilliant white sand beach. The village of Salang, where we stayed, is in a cove and contains countless bungalows and hammocks, each sitting on their own private stretch of beach. There is enough in these beach towns to keep you both occupied and/or gratefully secluded. The only downside/upside, is this being Malaysia, alcohol is hard to come by, so it doesn't have the party scene one might expect to find on an island, although sipping a Carlesberg or Tsing Tao beer while watching the blood red Malaysian sunset suited us just fine. Needless to say, we love Pulau Tioman, I mean where else can you find an island in Asia where there are no hawkers, only friendly laid-back locals and ten hammocks to every person?
