wanderlust wednesday: the scariest place on earth

Happy Halloween you all! I hope everyone is safe and recovering from Hurricane Sandy this morning!

In honor of Halloween, I thought it would be best to share with you one of the scariest places on earth, Count Dracula's Castle, aka, Castle Bran in Romania. I know there are scarier places out there, but this castle is definitely worth a visit.

1897, and Irish author, Bram Stoker, wrote the horror novel, Dracula about a vampire Count who resides in Castle Bran.
It is commonly thought that Stoker based his story off of the life of Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler. Vlad was a bloodthirsty ruler who applied the death penalty (by impaling no less) to pretty much anyone who got in his way. Vlad frequently used his father's name, Dracul, which means devil or dragon in Romania... Not sure which is more horrifying, Vlad or Dracula?

  1. I am the biggest wimp ever so I pretty much stay away from anything scary. No haunted houses for me!

  2. I thought Alcatraz was pretty darn freaky - especially in solitary confinement with the door closed.

  4. Yes, even if fictional, I think this castle would be on my list of Top Scary Places in the World. I read "The Historian" a few years ago, which is a fictional story that follows a father and daughter as they chase down Vlad Tepes, who was still alive. I was not able to sleep for days after reading it. Very creepy!
