Have you ever seen "The Bounty?" It's a 1984 Mel Gibson film (pre-crazy Mel) about British sailors in the 17th century who are ordered to bring breadfruit from Tahiti to Jamaica. A brief synopsis of the film...The captain ends up being crazy and the sailors (Mel Gibson) decide they want to just stay and hang out in Tahiti instead. That got me thinking about Tahiti ...I've never been, but just like the sailors, i'm sure I would never want to leave.
I've always thought Tahiti as stunning water, white sand beaches, and flat. But interestingly enough, Lonely Planet describes Tahiti like this;
"This probably isn’t the island whose photograph was on your holiday
brochure. No, there aren’t any sweeping white beaches and vistas over a neon blue lagoon are few and far between. Yet this is the heart of French Polynesia and it would be a shame to bypass the waterfall-laden, shadowy mountains, unpretentiously beautiful black-sand beaches and distinctly Polynesian buzz that make Tahiti a gem in its own right. "
Despite my mistaking Tahiti for Mo'orea or Bora Bora, I still want to visit. It sounds stunning, even despite the lack of white sand beaches.
Have you been to Tahiti? What was your favorite part?
I haven't seen that movie but I've always wanted to go to Tahiti. My friend went there on her honeymoon and they absolutely loved it!
ReplyDeleteOur fave island was Bora Bora! The Lonely Planet author must have been to a different island than us because we only saw white beaches (and one black sand on Moorea) That top picture is actually our hotel we stayed at on Tahiti - the bottom of the pool is sand, so it's like you're in the ocean! And the third picture down is our hotel in Bora Bora! I know I said this on your post yesterday - but we really are ready to go back, haha!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to pick your brain about Tahiti/ French Polynesia! I'm so glad that the lonely planet guy was wrong, he kind of crushed my dreams for a little bit there! So crazy that you have stayed at those places I posted!!
DeleteI definitely want to go... When I went to Easter Island, there was a lot of talk of Tahiti because apart form Santiago, Chile, Tahiti is the other place that provides Easter Island with a direct flight. People either ask if you came from Santiago or Tahiti. Had I known, had the time, and had the money, I probably would have taken that flight... Next time!
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy! I didn't know that Easter Island/ Tahiti are connected via a direct flight! Hmmm..whenever I get down there I will definitely make sure to visit Easter Island too!
