road trip day 35: through virginia on the skyline drive

Just 75 miles south of Washington D.C., the Skyline Drive runs straight through Shenandoah National Park in Northern Virginia.  It eventually turns into the Blue Ridge Parkway and follows the Blue Ridge Mountains into North Carolina. Fall is the perfect time to drive the 105 miles through the park but we were about  a week too late and missed a majority of the colors. Nevertheless, we could have spent hours looking out from the beautiful vistas and staring down at the small farming towns tucked into the green valleys below.  We also saw a bear cub climbing a tree, who was completely oblivious to us gawking at him! The drive took us a couple of hours or so, but it was definitely worth it and a nice break from all the cities we have been in lately.

  1. I LOVE skyline drive! My family goes every year. I think the best part is the winding roads to get there, ESPECIALLY when the leaves are changing.
