road trip day 29, boston

As luck would have it, we hit Boston the same day as the Red Sox won the World Series. I'm not a huge baseball fan, so I really had no idea what was going on, but as we stepped off the subway, we realized that all of Boston and the surrounding area was downtown at that exact same moment we were.  Confetti streamed out of the sky as a flood of people clad in Red Sox attire chanted throughout the streets. The air was charged with the electricity of hundreds of people immensely proud of their city. We fell in love with Boston at that moment. What added to our love of Boston is this awesome little red line painted throughout the city. By following it you get to essentially take yourself on a walking tour of Boston's history and it turned out as a great way to see Boston's different neighborhoods.

road trip day 28: salem, massachusetts

We couldn't have thought of a better place to spend Halloween than Salem, Massachusetts, home of the Salem witch trials. We were finally reunited with our friends and avid travelers, the Winters, who were going to spend the next couple of days with us exploring Salem and later Boston. We reunited and then got down to business comparing our trips and RV's. They are traveling in a Westfalia, and are definitely way more hard core than us at this traveling business! We broke down and stayed in hotels for a few nights, but they stayed at Walmart all along the way!

While in Salem we did the typical halloween touristy things...We went on a night tour of Salem, led by a real live witch (or so he claimed). We also did a haunted house, witnessed a few palm readings, and got accidentally caught in a witches circle (whatever that is).  It was all in good fun, but i'm pretty sure a majority of people there were claiming to be legitimate witches, although I would have been much more thrilled if they were all the Harry Potter variety of witches, waving wands and drinking butter beer while talking with their owls. No, none of the witches in Salem were even remotely interesting, they all just slunk around wearing polyester capes and waving sage in the air, I mean I could have even done that! Anyways, for Halloween we dressed up in the easiest possible manor. I was a cat, because I could wear yoga pants all day, which is always great in my book, and Brian was a pretty wicked Kurt Cobain. We pretty much had to dress up, because if you aren't dressed up in Salem, i'm pretty sure you would be on the receiving end of some bad omens or something.  Salem is definitely a trip, and at Halloween, its probably the weirdest spot on earth, but we had a great time, saw some great costumes, and enjoyed the company of our friends.

road trip day 27: nantucket to plymouth

Leaving Nantucket was hard. Brian even cried. But we were on to bigger and better things...Plymouth, Massachusetts. Plymouth, for those of you who don't remember elementary school history, was the first established colony in New England, where pilgrims disembarked the Mayflower and almost froze to death. It is also the site of the first Thanksgiving.  What Plymouth no longer contains is anything interesting whatsoever. There are no Pilgrims running about, no Mayflower (there is a Mayflower II but that's another story) and no wild turkeys begging to be eaten. The only thing that remains from 1620 is Plymouth Rock. And its history is questionable. It is really a big rock with 1620 carved on it. There is a guy hired by the city to stand by this rock and speak to strangers. He told us that the rock wasn't carved until the 18th century...and he wasn't even sure if it was the original "rock" the pilgrims saw. Thank you Plymouth!

road trip day 23: maine to massachusetts

Barely three days in Maine and it was already time to head south. In less than a week were were finally reuniting with our friends, who we originally planned the road trip with. Because of work and what not, they departed two weeks after us, and we had a standing date to meet up in Salem for Halloween. Leaving Maine was bittersweet. As we traveled south along the coast, we stopped to eat our last lobster roll, savoring the delightfully buttery lobster encased in soft white bread. Before we knew it, we had crossed the border into Massachusetts and were making our way towards Cape Cod.
